Nowadays, orthodontic treatment is not simply aesthetics trend but it is an essential solution to straighten teeth and correct teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. This helps fix all serious oral health complications caused by misalignment or malocclusion. Both patients’ dental health and general health derive benefit from straightened teeth.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry which involves malocclusion/misalignment diagnosis, prevention, education, treatment to help correct improper bite and bring back a more pleasing appearance to patients. Although your teeth look perfectly straight, they do not fit together in alignment when two jaws are resting or biting.
How do you know if you need orthodontic treatment?
Misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches when they meet each other as the jaws close when resting or biting may be the result of hereditary, traumas, abnormal eruption of permanent teeth to replace primary teeth in children’s age, or childhood habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting .
Different types of malocclusions require orthodontic intervention to correct improper bite and straighten teeth
- Spacing: Extra space occurs due to mismatch between the size of the jaw bones and the size of the teeth. Your teeth are too small compared to the size of your jaw bone. Tooth missing is also a common cause
- Overcrowding: Lack of space occurs because teeth and jaw size do not have a harmonious relationship. Your teeth are too large compared to the size of your jaw bone, they will not be able to fit in the space available, resulting in teeth that are crooked and overlap.
- Abnormal teeth eruption
- Protrusion teeth (Overjet): your teeth on upper arch extend past your teeth on lower arch horizontally. Protrusion teeth are prone to trauma
- Open bite: The front teeth don’t overlap the lower teeth. The anterior teeth of two arches can not meet no matter how hard the patient try to bite. The most common cause is tongue thrusting. Patients with open bite face pronunciation difficulty.
- Deep bite (Overbite): While there should be some overlap of your lower front teeth, in some cases lower incisors make contact with gum tissue in the upper arch of your jaw.
- Cross bite: your upper teeth bite inside your lower teeth. In can happen on one or both sides of your jaw and it can affect your front or back teeth.
- Reverse bite (Underbite): The lower jaw protrudes up and outward abnormally, partially overlapping with the upper teeth
